The Ardtully fishery on the Roughty river is a wonderful stretch of salmon fishing situated beside the ruins of Ardtully Castle. The present castle was built by Sir Richard Orpen in 1847. The Orpens were agents for the local landowners, the Pettys, and Sir Richard was the grandfather of the painter Sir William Orpen, who designed Ireland's pre-decimal banknotes. The original castle was built by the Anglo Normans in the 1200s and taken over by the McCarthys after the defeat of the Normans at nearby Callan Glen in 1261. The house was looted and burnt during the War of Independence in 1921.

The castle and fishery is owned by a local group and permits are available from Monday to Saturday. There are no Sunday permits.

The fishery is reached by turning right off the Kenmare to Kilgarvan road 8km from Kenmare near the Abha Beag bridge. Cars can be driven right to the river and parked in front of the castle. Cars can not be left on the privately owned land on either side of the river.
There are 10 named pools above and below the bridge - see map.

We'd love to hear from you!
